An Electronic Surveillance System Is Indispensable.
The world has become so dangerous today that nobody even dreams of a situation wherein there is no electronic surveillance. The National Conference of State Legislatures has given the matter a lot of thought. There is a constant debate on whether this is the right way to ensure safety for the populace. The point here to be noted is to what extent this kind of surveillance is comfortable for the common man.
Well, this is purely a matter of convenience and overall safety of the individual. He or she should feel safe, even when they leave their homes. They need to know that they can return home either by public or private transport without being the targets of terrorist attacks or muggers. Eastern countries have a fatalistic approach to problems such as these and seem to take these things in their stride. However, in the west, the consecutive acts of terror that have been perpetrated against innocent people have left people feeling very vulnerable and fragile. This is when the majority of the populace feels that electronic surveillance is a must.
The term electronic surveillance includes all kinds of surveillance and watching including telephone tapping, hidden cameras, covert security systems and so on. The main debate remains on the extent to which this can be implemented at the cost of security of a group of people. After the 9/11 attacks on the twin towers, there has been growing support of the surveillance of public areas. These systems have been updated and upgraded to ensure that any suspicious person is taken into custody for questioning.
The detractors of electronic surveillance are for privacy of the individual. The arguments put forward by these people make one wonder if it is really worth the effort to have every movement of yours monitored. If you had to enter a bank where there was a sophisticated surveillance in place, it is quite understandable. On the other hand, if this kind of system was installed in your workplace, just to keep track of any potential anti-social elements, life would certainly become quite difficult. The imposition of electronic surveillance in certain places has led to a rethink on the whole issue. Laws have been re-enacted and legislatures are being rewritten in the light of the recent attacks of terrorism on people who were merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were targeted for absolutely no fault of theirs and very few have actually lived to tell the tales of horror that they have been a part of. There is no doubt that electronic surveillance is here to stay and is now an integral part of our lives. Saying that you are not very comfortable about being watched is a lame excuse and is not one that will be welcomed by the majority of people who have had bad experiences.
